Center for Countering Digital Hate

Stand against anti-migrant, anti-Muslim, and racist hate and lies

Riots across the UK are showing how online disinformation and hate can cause real-world violence. Hateful anti-migrant and anti-Muslim narratives online are putting our communities in danger.

Social media and messaging services, particularly Telegram and Elon Musk’s X, have been used by far-right extremists to spread false narratives and reach millions of people in the UK.

Social media companies and policymakers must act now to stop the spread of hate and disinformation.

CCDH urges the UK government to:

  • Enforce existing laws to clamp down on hate speech and hate actors online, making it clear that platforms must remove and de-amplify hate and incitement.
  • Collaborate with targeted community groups to support those affected and involve them in discussions on tackling hate and disinformation.
  • Amend the Online Safety Act to enable proactive intervention when disinformation spikes.

CCDH demands social media platforms:

  • De-amplify hateful narratives and prevent the virality of hate speech.
  • Stop monetising accounts that incite violence.
  • Implement crisis response protocols for rapid action during information chaos.
